Not that we care too much about being culturally correct (we consider ourselves culture jammers after all!), but as luck would have it, we acquired an awesome Katana, and a week later Japanese model Maya just happened to be booked in for a shoot.
We’ll leave you with Maya’s words about her experience with shooting with a katana.
A wave of nerves came over me when I was holding a real katana in my hands. The weight of it, what it was originally made for, the history and meaning behind it made it so much more than just a sword that I was holding. As I have gotten a little bit older I find myself pondering on the meaning behind objects much more. To kill, to be killed, to suicide, to be put on show – the katana reflected so many of the complex emotions I’d been carrying these past few months. We all have a little bit of crazy within us. Mine was definitely hiding when I was posing calmly with the katana. Respect, honour and loyalty. Three words I will never forget. Thank you for the reminder, and sharing a little bit of your Zen with me @justinfoxau.
