“Welcome to Racewars!!!!“
yells race director Jamie to each and every car as competitors & support crew meander onto the airfield, after an extended line-up that extends through the airport carpark and up and down the Albany Highway.
Racewars will soon be upon us, rolling in like a circus, and providing a great tourist injection into the semi-sleepy town of Albany, some 4 hours south of Perth.
The event started in 2013, running up north on a dusty airstrip in Wyalkatchem went on hiatus for a year, before finding a home in Albany, with the support of the Mayor & local council and the help of volunteers from the Great Southern Motorplex.
I was keen on shooting it ever since coming across this on YouTube:
Over the long weekend the event hosts multiple features:
- Kebabs & Cars – a static meet on the foreshore
- 400m (1/4 mile) roll-on drags
- 800m (1/2 mile) roll-on drags
- 1000m standing start passes (single car only)
- 200m (1/8 mile) drag & grudge racing, for cash (presented by Forged Magazine)
- Show n shine
- Supersprint through the industrial area
The Racewars Group is committed to improving this event as they continue to grow, with plenty of changes being implemented for 2018, and I’m sure they’ll keep hearing and learning from any feedback they receive. I hope to get back over in the coming years, but for now I’ll leave you with select images from the inaugural event last year, and keep an eye out for Motive DVD & Speedhunters coverage from 2018.
