I was sad to hear this morning that H.R. Giger has passed away at age 74. Most of the world will remember him for designing the monster and sets for Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, but Giger influenced a whole generation of artists, myself included.
The very first art book I ever bought with my own money as a kid was an H.R. Giger book, which still sits on my bookshelf today. Some of the imagery in that book is pretty damn disturbing, so much so that I don’t even have to revisit it’s pages to conjure up the imagery in my mind!
His combination of mechanical, machine and human elements into nightmarish creatures made a massive impact on my imagination growing up, creating surrealist images in a style he described as “biomechanical” or “biomechanoids.”
